Choose food to match the birds you want
Mixed seed suits a wide range of small birds. Sunflower hearts are popular with finches and tits, and they leave no husks behind. Fat balls give extra energy in cold weather.
Keep feeders clean
Damp seed and droppings can spread disease. Empty and scrub feeders with hot soapy water every week or two, rinse well and dry them before refilling.
Worth remembering
Only put out as much food as the birds will finish in a day or two. Stale seed does more harm than good.
Do not forget water
A shallow dish of fresh water is useful for drinking and bathing. In freezing weather, check it daily and break any ice.
Put feeders in a safe spot
Place feeders close to cover so birds can escape quickly, but not so close that a cat can hide next to them. Move them occasionally if droppings build up on the ground below.
